Health and Safety Regulations for VDUs

The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations 1992 implement an EC Directive which came into effect from January 1993.

Employers are required by law to minimize the risks to staff from working on a VDU by ensuring workstations and working practices are well designed.

The Regulations apply to all staff who regularly use VDUs as a significant part of their daily work.

Employers must assess workstations to ensure they meet the minimum requirements and take responsibility for remedying the risks identified.

Factors that must be considered include:

  • screens
  • keyboards
  • mice
  • desks
  • chairs
  • lighting
  • working environment
  • the job being done
  • software
  • special needs of individual staff.
